Supplier Screening Practice
When we bring on new suppliers, we screen them for favourable social and environmental attributes. This helps us work with partners that are most aligned with our mission.
Backriver Blends
Jamaican roots. Maine made.
A summary of our positive social and environmental impact, along with the commitments and plans shaping Backriver Blends as we grow.
A note from our founder
We are proud to publish our first ever Impact Report. This is a summary of our positive social and environmental impact, as well as some of our plans for the future. As an immigrant and women-owned business based in Maine, we have always centered people and planet in the work that we do and this report acts as a record of how we turn these values into measurable impact.
A special thank you to our customers who have supported our mission since our inception, enabling us to share the taste of Jamaica with a greater community.
Our Purpose
Our mission is to bring the bold, authentic flavors of Jamaica to every table — without compromise.
Rooted in Caribbean tradition and crafted in the heart of Maine, we create small-batch, plant-based marinades and specialty foods that are free from the top nine allergens, so that everyone — regardless of dietary need — can experience the joy of inclusive, vibrant cooking.
We honor our heritage, our ingredients, and the families we serve by holding fast to clean-label formulation, high-quality sourcing, and time-honored recipes. From our kitchen to yours, Backriver Blends is where culture meets conscience, and every jar tells the story of a mother’s love, a daughter’s freedom at the table, and an island’s enduring spirit.
Our Local Community
We were born in Topsham, Maine, in 2024, and this town is still our home base. We source locally where we can and show up for the people who showed up for us from day one.
That means donating to local non-profit organizations, collaborating with other small businesses in regional groups, and attending markets throughout the year to connect with our neighbours directly. As we grow nationally, we remain intentionally rooted in this community.
JEDI Commitment
Backriver Blends exists because too many people have been told there's no seat for them at the table.
We started this company in response to food-allergy exclusion, and every bottle we make is allergen-free and plant-based for that reason.
That belief in belonging doesn't stop at the ingredients. We believe belonging is achieved, when we celebrate and honour justice, equity, diversity and inclusion. These principles shape how we do business.
This is a living commitment. As Backriver grows, we'll keep looking for new, concrete ways to make sure everyone really does have a seat at the table. Accountability for this commitment is assigned to the owner, Jordene Trueh.
Good Ingredients
When we say good, we mean good for the people who enjoy our products, good for the farmers and producers behind our ingredients, and good for the environment that makes it all possible.
We use real ingredients you recognize and can pronounce, and we produce in small batches at our micro-production facility.
We take conscientious steps to ensure the suppliers we work with uphold the same values that we have when it comes to social and environmental impact.
When we bring on new suppliers, we screen them for favourable social and environmental attributes. This helps us work with partners that are most aligned with our mission.
Every year, we trace where our packaging and ingredients come from to understand what the possible human rights or environmental risks may be. Knowing these risks allows us to make better procurement decisions.
Climate Action Plan
Living in Maine, we witness the beauty of our natural environment every day, and so we know it is worth protecting.
This is why we have developed a climate action plan. We are committed to supporting the global ambition to limit global warming to 1.5°C, a target that has been adopted by 196 countries and thousands of businesses around the world.
We are committed to reviewing this plan annually to track our impact and progress, and to publishing it in a publicly accessible place.
We are a small-batch specialty food producer operating at a micro-production scale, and we have not yet completed a formal greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory. We do, however, understand where our footprint concentrates, and we have built this plan around those sources rather than around new data-collection projects:
Our two largest sources — heating oil and electricity — are already recorded on the utility and fuel bills we receive, so we can track them without any new logging system.
We have set the following SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) targets and committed to measuring and reporting against them every year:
To make these targets happen, we have allocated the following resources:
This action plan will serve as our climate roadmap for the next three years, until it is updated with new objectives. If our progress moves faster than expected, we will update this plan at a closer date. As our capacity grows, we intend to move from tracking energy toward a fuller estimate of our emissions, including ingredients, packaging, and shipping.
Collective Action
Backriver Blends participates in ongoing collective action through founder Jordene Trueh's service on the board of directors of the Lewiston Auburn Community Market (LACM), a multistakeholder cooperative working to establish the first cooperatively run market and shared-use commercial kitchen in Maine.
LACM's mission is to increase food access in underserved communities, such as downtown Lewiston, a designated "Low Supermarket Access Area" with a significant New American population and limited access to fresh, culturally preferred foods.
Through board service, Backriver Blends contributes governance leadership and food-industry expertise to this initiative.

Certifying Our Impact
B Corp certification is a globally recognized standard for businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.
Unlike a marketing claim, B Corp is independently verified. This means companies must demonstrate real practices and policies across workers, community, and the environment.
Backriver Blends is currently working toward B Corp certification, meaning we are actively building and formalizing the practices that back up our values. We hope to have achieved our B Corp Certification by the end of this year.
